Description Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza is another game based on the blockbuster action movie Die Hard starring Bruce Willis. Unlike other Die Hard games, Nakatomi Plaza works to retell the story in-game as much as possible, allowing you to witness many of the film’s events (or participate in them!) from inside the tender bare feet of protagonist John McClane. For those still interested, the game is based on the first film of the Die Hard series, in which cunning Alan Rickman takes over the state-of-the-art Nakatomi Plaza building as part of a deeply devious robbery, and only Bruce Willis, there to meet his separated executive wife, can stop the faux /5(38).

Either that or I’m mis-remembering and thinking about a different game. I tend to check patches for DxWnd and natively run games, especially if they are proving difficult to run which this one was. Using a program like DxWnd or dgVoodoo, some patches may break the game.
Others are superflous as they only alter resolution and aspect ration which those programs do a better job of it anyway. Bottom line: it works as best as I can make it. Hi, Thank you for replying. I understand. I finished the game today. Turns out it was no problem, i re-applied the 1. I didn’t have to use any compatibility mode. Because in DxWind, the game was choppy also in the cut scenes even trough i capped my fps to 60 and in DxWind it showed up as 33 fps. But no matter it was fine otherwise.
You are doing God’s work with those Installers, so thank you! There are several parody posters scattered around the building. Health can be restored by collecting the contents of the first aid boxes. Some light puzzling will involve defusing bombs and re-starting electricity. You’ll sometimes need specific items to do this, but often a gun will do.

To make entirely sure the copyright on Bruce’s face is sacrosanct, the mirrors in the bathrooms don’t reflect, which is a bit of a surprise in this day and age. When fire, destroyer of cities and bane of civilisation, is called upon to play a role, it is here acted by disastrously animated wibbly-wobbly orange stuff.
It looks stupid, and rather fails to inspire the terror that a blazing inferno in a confined space ought. The sound is fine. Guns go budda-budda, bad guys shout things from a rather limited selection in German-ish accents and fire crackles. The context-driven music is okay, but nothing exceptionally notable or unworthy. However, not since the otherwise spiffy No-One Lives Forever has a game suffered from such dull, turgid, drawn-out interruptions to game play.
All are displayed using the game’s uninspired graphics, in which ridiculously polygonal characters open and close their mouths in bland mid-distance shots while dialogue is played. It’s often difficult to work out what’s actually going on in them, and who’s meant to be who. None of the film’s tension is carried over to the cutscenes, which, instead of advancing the plot, suck away any glimmerings of tension as effectively as the very voids of space itself.
Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza bases itself on the film with near-fanaticism. Assuming you’ve seen the film and surely everyone has you’ll know all the plot twists and all the set-pieces, which neatly excludes one reason to play all the way through.
Sometimes you’ll need to rely on knowledge of the film to progress: unless you remember that at one point McClane used a fire hose to jump off a roof, you’ll spend a frustrating period running around trying to work out what the hell you’re meant to be doing while dying over and over again.
In order to pad things out, a few new events have been added, which are a mixed bag. There’s a nice section down in the parking lot escorting Argyle to a safe place, a section helping a SWAT team, and a Towering Inferno moment when you have to guide a hostage through a level as fire spreads, which would have been a lot more fun if aforementioned hostage wasn’t so cripplingly stupid.
The new sewers and labs, however, are dull. There’s also a suspension of disbelief issue brought about by the conventions of FPS games. Instead of Hans Gruber and his hand-picked team of ten or so terrorists, we have Hans Gruber and his hand-picked team of two or three hundred terrorists The game also suffers from obscure mission objectives.
Generally, the only way to tell what you’re meant to be doing at any one time is to press the ‘O’ key to bring up a list – rarely does the game content give you any guidance. Even the listed objectives are often unhelpful and apparently random “Jump off the roof” being my particular favourite – I did. I died. Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza attempts to add a couple of minor innovations to the standard FPS setup, but both end up being rather pointless.
As well as a health bar you have to account for stamina and morale. Your stamina falls as John runs, jumps and otherwise exerts himself, and once depleted he can’t do any of that stuff anymore. Unfortunately, stamina hardly ever comes into play during shootouts, where exertion consists mostly of leaning slowly from behind a wall, and instead kicks in when you have cleared the level but are running around looking for the way out. Its main function, then, is to slow down gameplay.
The morale bar drops as you take damage and find yourself in dire straits, and has no perceivable effect whatsoever. Compliments, though, on the complete absence of jumping puzzles, which are never a good idea in games that don’t let you see your feet. Enemies have fairly basic AI which lets them lean around corners and otherwise make decent use of cover, and sometimes roll across the floor to thwart your aim, but they don’t co-operate in any perceptible way and have a tendency to stand there firing blankly as you charge towards them.
There’s a modest selection of weapons available: a pistol, an MP5, an M16, a sniper rifle, a heavy machine gun and flash grenades. You’ll use the MP5 to the near-exclusion of all else, because ammo for it is plentiful while being scarce for the other weapons. There are a few unforgivably maddening moments. Certain scripted events, like a firefight between the terrorists and SWAT team, would be much more effective if it did something to hide the fact that the terrorists are invincible found out by sniping 35 rounds into the head of one of them.
However, it’s the hidden pleasures that lurk behind its baseball bat violated face that make Nakatomi Plaza well worth a look, especially at this price. It’s time to pull a pig off the shelf and realise that what lies within is well worth your attention. Still wouldn’t shag it though. You play John McClane in this oddly dated return to the hit film but frankly, this first person shooter really doesn’t bring much to the genre.
A good portion of the plot mimics the movie Die Hard , where an off-duty and barefoot cop has to take on a crew of terrorists threatening to blow up a building and kill a bunch of hostages. Unfortunately the game doesn’t go anywhere near replicating the movies stunning visual effects. I found this FPS to be riddled with clipping issues and chunky poorly rendered graphics.
The plot is also poorly rendered, forcing players to follow a pre-defined route through all 30 floors of the Nakatomi Plaza.
Despite it seemingly large size, the building is really just a tunnel, with all but the necessary doors locked and no way other than shooting, whacking or in some way killing, to get around problems. Your arsenal is also fairly limited, leaving gamers to rely only on an uninteresting assortment of five firearms and an axe.
You also get to play with your police badge, wire cutters, Zippo lighter and Motorola Talkabout radio. The game does introduce one unique element to the typical shooter fare, morale. Not only do you have endurance and health meters, but your character has to contend with his morale as well.
The more dangerous times become, the more heavy firefights you get into the more your morale dips. And when it dips the angry the baddies get. Die Hard is a borderline diversion that’s worth the price to die hard fans of FPS, but I’d warn all others to stand clear.

It appears your browser does not have it turned on. Please see your browser settings for this feature. While the cast can safely rip up any overly-hopeful thank you speeches written in a fit of self delusion for the next Oscars awards, they do on the whole manage to replicate the main characters mainly McClane and chief-terrorist Hans Gruber fairly convincingly. Ultimately, though, Nakatomi Plaza is an entertaining licensed shooter, which is marred by a pathetically dated engine and pitiful graphics, a visual monotony which makes the somewhat varied gameplay and well scripted set-pieces tire by about the half way mark.
However, it’s the hidden pleasures that lurk behind its baseball bat violated face that make Nakatomi Plaza well worth a look, especially at this price. It’s time to pull a pig off the shelf and realise that what lies within is well worth your attention.

As an aficionado of the first three Die Hard flicks, I do share your sophisticated adulation of the movie’s FPS adaption that holds up decently well, whilst being watched through glasses which don’t need to be nostalgically fogged-up that much at all.
Bye for now, Thomas. Cheers Thomas. Die Hard games have a surprising high quality for licensed games, and Nakatomi Plaza is definitely my faveourite of the lot. I’m kicking myself that I’ve not played it before. Lol this must be the only FPS Sierra ever made. Btw according to mobygames, there were 2 patches released, 1. Are they included or must be added manually? Great job once again. It’s version 1. I don’t tend to look for patches unless I come across a game breaking bug.
Sometime DxWnd does the same thing as the patch anyway eg. None of these were a an isuue for me. If you desire, you can add them manually, but I don’t know if they’ll effect the DxWnd settings. I KNEW if anyone could upload this it would be you! I think Minority Report is more likely than Condemned 2 as 6th generation emulation is in a better place than the 7th. RPCS3, the PS3 emulator is making decent progress with games like Catherine and Dark Souls 2 playable no mention of Condemned 2 though , but there’s still a huge number of glitches and it takes a massive amount of resources to run smoothly for the bigger games.
